How to change your mail server's SMTP port

Change the TCP port your mail server listens on for incoming Internet email.

Exchange spam

Microsoft Exchange 2000 and 2003

  1. Open Control Panel\Administrative Tools\Services
  2. Stop the Simple Mail Transport Protocol (SMTP) Service
  3. Open the Exchange System Manager
  4. Administrative Groups
  5. [Site]
  6. Servers
  7. [ServerName]
  8. Protocols
  9. SMTP
  10. Default SMTP Virtual Server
  11. Right-click and open Properties
  12. Choose 'All Unassigned' for IP address
  13. Advanced
  14. Edit
  15. Change the TCP port (usually to 26)
  16. Click OK
  17. Click OK
  18. Click OK
  19. Exit Exchange System Manager
  20. Re-Open Control Panel\Administrative Tools\Services
  21. Start the Simple Mail Transport Protocol (SMTP) Service
  22. Open a Windows command prompt on the server
  23. Enter: telnet localhost 26
  24. You should get a 220 greeting from Exchange Server (if not go back to step 1)
  25. Enter: quit (to close the SMTP session)
  26. You have successfully changed Exchange Server's listening SMTP port

Microsoft Exchange 5.5

  1. Open Control Panel\Administrative Tools\Services
  2. Stop the Exchange Server Internet Mail service.
  3. Open the file \Winnt\System32\Drivers\Etc\Services in notepad.
  4. Locate the line: smtp 25/tcp mail
  5. Change the 25 to 26
  6. Save the Services file.
  7. Restart the Exchange Server IMS service.

Lotus Domino 6

  1. From the Domino Administrator, click the Configuration tab.
  2. Open the Server document for the server that runs the SMTP service.
  3. Click the Ports - Internet Ports - Mail tab.
  4. In the Mail (SMTP Inbound) column, change the port to 26
  5. Restart the SMTP service as follows:
  6. Click the Server - Status tab and select the Server Tasks view.
  7. Select SMTP Server from the list of tasks.
  8. Click Tools - Task - Restart, and then click Yes.
